As a KMI practitioner, my work is in strong connection with Rolfing. Thomas Myers, creator of Kinesis Myofascial Integration, has been a Rolfer for over thirty years. In his method, we use a lot of similar techniques to Rolfing and therefore we are asked a very common question of Rolfers, which is, “Is it going to hurt?” Certainly, the classical approach was to “get in there”, shearing the tissue strongly, but a lot of people in the Structural Integration field have since changed stride, finding a new meaning to what Dr. Rolf meant when she said, “go deeper.”
In more recent years, a lot of SI people have been influenced by the work of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy and Osteopathy as well as Source Point Therapy. These methods work with the greater resonant field of health that include not only the material realm of deep bodywork, but also more energetic healing. This was a large part of Dr. Rolf’s original vision, but she chose a strong approach in the earlier days, perhaps because it seemed to match what people were exploring at the time. There were a lot of cathartic therapies that were leading people to a more outward expression.
To me, this important shift in perspective now allows clients to be better served because there is a resonance of safety in the room and clients do not have to place their attention on getting through the pain administered by their bodywork practitioner. Instead, they can come into an awareness of the unfolding of the session, like descending down a spiral staircase, as the practitioner works from superficial to deeper tissue gradually and more respectfully. This slower descent into depth is actually administered, not by the practitioner, but by the tone, texture and tempo of the field within and around the client. Before the deep can be addressed, the superficial and middle need to be organized.
How is this more energetic way effective? I find it helpful to come into relationship with the wholeness or full healthiness of the client’s body, soul and spirit. I am not following the all too often utilized method of “fixing” what seems broken. The body can react to the “fix-it” method as invasive and find other ways to compensate for the imbalance or even withdraw further into it and thereby not come to a more true resolution. The problem with that approach is that the practitioner cannot be sensitive enough to be tuned into the greater and more subtle energetic and fluid field of the body and beyond the body. This can only be recognized by offering a more listening touch; a quieter, receptive touch that wants to get to know and respond to the story held within the body and allow it to discover it’s own resolution.
Some people may think this can sound too broad – which is true that it holds a broader view of the body – but it also can be very specific. Upon listening to the body, I get drawn into specific pockets where the fascia, or connective tissue, begins to “nest” or lacks integrity and I deepen my pressure to the point of blockage and then I wait for the tissue to resolve. As it loosens, a greater sense of breath and movement come into the area and it reconnects with the rest of the body effortlessly and peacefully.
“Wholeness is ever present and is all that is present.” (James Jealous, DO) I wait for the body to respond from its’ ever present priority of health, drawing itself back into balance and harmony. In helping someone to heal, I listen to the beautiful flow of life in their body. As they, too, feel that presence, it evokes health and the intention to find out more deeply who they are and what is wanting to come forward. Then the body, spirit and soul are on the unfolding pathway of healing from within.
